Okay, Hillary won the popular vote. But has anybody considered that 20% of her votes came from cross-over Republicans that would rather have her as McCain's opponent?

How Wisconsin Legislators Voted on Ending Legalized Bribery

Let’s spotlight two cases where the U.S. Supreme Court legislated from the bench and violated common sense and our shared values. Next we’ll see what our state legislators have (or have not) done recently to arrest and restrain the government corruption that resulted. We’ll look at where the problem is most festering. And there is one important legislative step that is needed right now. Let’s get er done. And, by the way, there’s a scoop here, with news of a previously unannounced, surprise candidate for election to the state legislature, spoiling to unseat one of the very worst of the “Public Enemies” to be described below.

When big money oils politics, corruption of the democratic process and legalized bribery of elected representatives is certain. Bribery is the right name because no corporations, groups, or well-heeled “persons”, anywhere in the world, provide that kind of money to election campaigns and political parties without expecting, and getting, a nod, a wink, and a huge return on investment. Taxpayers must pay for that swindle. And it’s legalized in the USA by two strange Supreme Court rulings.

Free Speech and a country in trouble

By Jack E. Lohman

Imagine that you’ve invested in a private company with a conflicted board of directors, where some are taking cash on the side from the area’s most expensive accounting service, ABC, and your CEO is in on the deal.

And they are giving contracts to ABC instead of the cheaper and better XYZ service, because ABC gives kickbacks and XYZ doesn’t. They are stealing from you and driving your company into bankruptcy, all while padding their own pockets. Nice.

And it’s not just ABC they’re in bed with, it’s every vendor your company deals with! Cash and profits going out and flowing back to the decision makers! And your company has to pay higher prices because some of the money must be kicked back to your leaders.

Wow!!! In the criminal world, that’s bribery, payola and theft. It’s corrupt and illegal. People actually go to jail for this kind of thing.

But this isn’t only happening in the criminal world, it’s also happening in your government. Your trusted politicians (directors), receive campaign contributions (payola and kickbacks), and give away taxpayer assets in return.

Think… “road contractors, travel contracts, and voting software contracts.” Politicians award taxpayer-funded contracts and policies and tie it into this thing called “freedom of speech.”

The U.S. Supreme Court did that for you, but as blogger Clyde Winter writes, money is not speech. It is a possession, like your house or car. You use cash to buy things and services and, sometimes, political favors. If you don’t have money, you are out of luck.

Politicians claim you can also buy speech, and if that’s all it bought and none went into their pockets, it wouldn’t be so bad. But the very politicians who serve as your state’s and your nation’s board of directors are taking this cash and giving away taxpayer assets in return. They are on the take, and getting away with it!

It began with Ronald Reagan, led to the 1994 Gingrich takeover of congress, and culminated with the election of George Bush. I voted for Reagan and both Bushes, but I’m a lot smarter today.

I ask conservatives repeatedly: How are you liking it so far?  I never get an answer. These wiseacres started out to drown the government in the bathtub and hit the toilet instead, and now they are wallowing in the results.

Tax cuts for the wealthy turned our $300 billion surplus into a $600 billion deficit, trashed the dollar bill, drove housing prices down and fuel and food costs up, sent jobs overseas, and transferred our country’s assets to the Asians, Europeans and Middle Easterners.

I ask again, Are we having fun yet?

There is but one solution, and that’s to totally replace our government. Not incrementally, all at once. But the Republican party is still filled with the garbage that got us to where we are today. Let’s see if the Dems are willing to give us back our democracy. And if not, they will get ousted too.

In fairness, there’s a handful of decent politicians who don’t like the image of the corrupt system and deserve re-election. The voters know who they are.

Only a handful? See the nine best legislators: Democracy Defenders at WDC

Politicians

Give poor old Sensenbrenner a break. It is rare that he does anything than doesn’t put cash in his pocket, but this is one of those times. Real ID makes real sense, unfunded or not. Would we rather send our money to DC so they can skim off and send part of it back? Or just pay the bill up front? I’ll take the latter.

And don't forget to check out his challenger Jim Burkee HERE

Budget myopia threatens 21st Century G.I. Bill

Legislation introduced to allow veterans' educational benefits to keep pace with the rising cost of higher education has recently been opposed by lawmakers citing concerns about the federal budget deficit. But federal data show that the proposed increase would have an imperceptible effect on the federal budget deficit. WMC: Bad for Business?
WMC stands accused of putting conservative political agenda ahead of the state's best interests

When the dust settled in the state Supreme Court race on April 1, the biggest winner appears to have been the biggest spender.

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce got what it wanted — a victory for Michael Gableman, a self-described "judicial conservative." The business lobby is banking on the newly elected justice to turn the court rightward, especially in cases that could benefit business at the expense of consumers or employees.

What Is A Veteran?

When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building' by George Bush.

He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.'

You could have heard a pin drop.

Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American.

During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?'

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.

We have eleven such ships; how many does France have? '

You could have heard a pin drop

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries.

Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, 'whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.'

He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied 'Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'

You could have heard a pin drop.

A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in  Paris by plane.

At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. 'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer asked sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting admitted that, yes, he had been to France previously.

'Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.'

The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it.'

'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France!'

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained. 'Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen to show it to.'

You could have heard a pin drop

What Is A Veteran?

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.

Let's take a minute or two and thank God for our blessed country, and for all who sacrificed their lives that we might continue to live in freedom.

Thanks to each one of you who served in the military.

Jared Bernstein book 'Crunch' a hit

Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed? (And Other Unsolved Economic Mysteries)

EPI senior economist Jared Bernstein has a new book out that is getting strong reviews. Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed? is an accessible explanation of what happened to the bulk of Americans during the past couple of decades, with a prescription for how to repair the damage. This week, Crunch was reviewed in the New York Times business section and prominently cited in a Bob Herbert column, also in the Times. Here is what the Utne Reader had to say about it: "No mere populist rant, Crunch is organized as a broad primer on U.S. economics that uses inequality as a starting point for understanding this wider subject. Bernstein's concise explanations of issues like unemployment and health care expenses are meaty and engaging, offering laypeople tangible insight into how the economy functions and what it takes to ensure that those who make it work also share its rewards." One of the most widely quoted economists in America, Bernstein has been touring the country to tout the book. Here is a video clip of one appearance in California. He has also nabbed prime real estate on the Huffington Post Web site, providing the featured post every Monday morning. His latest piece argues that conservative, supply-side economic policies have had plenty of time to work, and the results are dismal. It is time to try our approach now.

Order a copy of Crunch in the EPI Bookstore.

Disclosure: I am a center-right Republican that (regrettably) voted for Bush twice. But the Republicans look worse here because they (are/were) in power and the party blocking reform. Next year it may be the Democrats taking center stage. Were I to have a political choice it would be for a strong third-party reform candidate in all seats. I do not like our very costly and ineffective duopoly. Jack Lohman
